The Stanford Prison Experiment was a study conducted in 1971 by psychologist Philip Zimbardo to investigate the psychological effects of perceived power and authority. College students were randomly assigned to play the roles of guards and prisoners in a simulated prison environment. However, the study quickly spiraled out of control as the guards became abusive and the prisoners suffered psychological harm. The experiment was supposed to last two weeks but was terminated after only six days due to the extreme and unethical behavior that had developed. The study raised serious ethical concerns and sparked a debate about the use of deception and the potential harm to participants in psychological research. **

In the Stanford Prison Experiment, free will refers to the participants' ability to make choices and decisions independently, despite the constraints of the simulated prison environment. The guards and prisoners were given certain roles and rules to follow, but they still had the freedom to choose how they would act within those roles. This concept of free will was tested as the participants grappled with the ethical implications of their actions and the power dynamics within the experiment. Ultimately, the study highlighted how individuals' free will can be influenced by situational factors and authority figures. **
